One of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots. Over 7,400 species of flowering plants, 508 bird species, and 179 amphibian species are found here, many endemic. The Ghats are home to the endangered lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri tahr, and Malabar civet, alongside vast stretches of tropical evergreen and shola grasslands.
Home to snow leopards, red pandas, and over 10,000 plant species. The Eastern Himalayas are particularly rich in endemic species, harboring the only known population of the Namdapha flying squirrel. The region's alpine meadows, temperate forests, and rhododendron groves support an extraordinary diversity of life adapted to extreme altitudes.
Includes Northeast India. Hosts 7,000+ plant species, 1,300 bird species, and numerous freshwater turtle species found nowhere else. The region spans the Brahmaputra floodplains, Garo-Khasi hills, and the rainforests of Arunachal Pradesh, supporting over 80 species of threatened mammals including the hoolock gibbon and clouded leopard.
Includes the Nicobar Islands. Known for mangrove forests, coral reefs, and endemic species like the Nicobar megapode and Nicobar pigeon. The islands' isolation has produced unique evolutionary lineages, including the Nicobar tree shrew and several endemic reptiles found on no other landmass on Earth.
